Jinguashi (金瓜石)

I have explored many places around Taipei county (Danshui, Jin Shan, Yangmingshan hotsprings, Yingge etc). Other than Yangmingshan, none of them were really worth blogging about... until last weekend when I visited Jin Gua Shi (金瓜石).

3 km away from the more famous Jiufen, Jinguashi is was also once the cold mining centre during the Japanese era. To me, this was a better place to get a glimpse of Taiwan's Japanese heritage. Jiufen was just too popular. In comparison, Jinguashi felt really quaint. It's surrounding hillsides are also wonderful to stroll & get lost in.

Took these shots using the "Colour Accent" mode of my trusty Canon Ixus800

Crown Prince Chalet - built as an official residence for the Jap Royal family to use when visiting Taiwan.

Not-yet-restored Jap style wooden house

Gold Mining Museum - with the word "金" incorporated into the design

A little further away from the museum...

along this trail....

and this....

Just a 5 min walk....

You get this...

Village against the mountains...

Climb up this to get a better view...

Great place for a picnic - if only the weather was better...

Winding roads leading towards the sea

surrounding hills...

View from the top

On the other side of the hills: The ruins of the "Golden Temple"

another uphill climb...

The it started to rain... took this shot while seeking shelter

the ruins are like something out of a Greek Mythology

not so well paved path kind of adds to its beauty

Thank goodness we didn't drive... took the bus back to town

The original intention was to explore Jinguashi in the morning & hang out in Jiufen in the afternoon, but the crowd at Jiufen was HORRIFIC, so gave it miss.

*note to self: to bring friends/ family here on a weekday*

Random shots on the way to the train station:

Luckily we reserved seats in the train...

I love trains - this is one of the ulu-er train type

Off to Taipei!

Breeze & Strawberry Mochi

Inspired by Eve's entry, I decided to buy myself the strawberry mochi as well!

I got mine (no doting hubby to buy for me to I hunted them down myself haha) from the famous Breeze Center Basement Food Hall. Speaking of this foodcourt, let me rave about a bit...
Only1 word to describe it: ATAS
Everything here from the bread to the groceries are gourmet, mostly imported from Europe leh!
Breeze Center is also the perfect place to catch the perfectly coiffed & botoxed Taiwanese Taitais in all their glory. Biggest diff betw Taitais & the ones I see back home? The Taiwanese ones comes in only 1 size: ZERO. Hate them.

Jealousy aside, Breeze Center is one of the more interesting malls I have been in Taiwan. Although I could only afford to shop in the Food Hall, it's was still fun to walk around & gawk. Most of the malls in Taiwan prefers to go "Jap", but Breeze brought in a lot interesting European brands, most of which I've never heard of. (I saw the most stunning pair of creamy nude patent Mary Janes!! Unfortunately it was going for NTD9500...can pay my rent!)

Anyway, back to my mochi: Bought 2 types, one is the standard mochi skin, the other with glutinous rice skin. They are both delicious! And yes just as Eve described, i can SMELL the strawberry as i cut the open!

If I have to choose, I'll go for the glutinous rice skin one. I like the texture of the skin. Yup I ate both ALL BY MYSELF. Burp.

PS: yah lah yah lah I give on the diet liao...

Thats our target!

Getting foggy again...

This rock was split into 2 during the 921 earthquake

Taking a break...

The road ahead of us

Last 15mins!

Getting there...

Finally!

We did it! The rest of the clan took off without taking photo...

The climb back - uphill!

We were all the way down there!

Drove to our mountain resort in Sitou - very foggy already

Regular temp updates provided by the resort

Finally checked into our room, it looks simple, but it's very well equipped, competed with electric bed warmers! But at NTD8000 a night, it better be well equipped!
We were watching the Taiwan equvilent of Project Superstar by the way.

For our supper later - smoked chicken feet & duck wings

Pre-dinner nap

Buffet dinner comes with the room package - served in the dining hall

Outside the resort - a bit like genting right?
